Having a child with sensory issues has been a learning experience for me. Because of his ADHD, he fidgets a lot and one thing we’ve found that he really likes to work with is play dough. He usually just squishes it around in his hands, which really seems to help him regulate himself, so I make my own play dough for him fairly often. I have experimented with different ingredients, colors and add-ins (think glitter), but recently I made some Rainbow Play Dough because well, I like rainbows and thought it would be cool to have a bunch of vibrant colors for him to play with.
Rainbow Play Dough

Here’s what you do (ingredients are per color):
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup salt
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
- Red, orange, yellow, green and blue food coloring
- Extra fine glitter (optional)

Here’s what you do:
1. In a small pot, combine your flour, water, salt vegetable oil and cream of tartar along with a few drops of one color food coloring and mix well.

2. Cook on your stove on medium heat for just a couple of minutes, stirring constantly until you have a play dough like consistency.

3. Carefully remove the dough from the pot (be careful because it will be hot).
4. Once it cools down, roll it into a ball and place in a Ziploc bag until you are ready to use it.
5. Repeat steps 1-5 with each color.
6. Place each color next to each other and combine into a ball (or not…whatever you like).
Optional: roll in some glitter and your dough is ready to play with. It’s sure to be hours of fun for your kids.
