As many of you already know, I lost my mom in February. It’s been incredibly hard and even though it was expected at some point because she was very, very sick, it happened much sooner than my family was prepared for.
This is going to be the first Mother’s Day without her and even though I haven’t completely processed the fact that she’s gone (I still half expect to pick up the phone and have it be her on the other end), I wanted to do something special in her honor. Years ago, I remember visiting with a friend who had an angel on her wall made from beach rocks. My mom always loved the beach and I wanted to try to recreate the angel out of beach rocks. That way whenever I walk past my Beach Rock Angel hanging on my wall, it will remind me of her.
Obviously, I needed some beach rocks to make my angel from and last weekend I headed to the beach to collect some rocks. Lucky for me when I went it was low tide so there were plenty of rocks for me to choose from. I went home immediately and got to work on my Beach Rock Angel.

Beach Rock Angel Craft To Always Remember Those We Love
Here’s what you need:
- 5 beach rocks (1 for the head, one for the body, two legs and one for the halo)

- 2 clam shells (approximately the same size)
- An 8×10 frame
- Black poster board
- Scissors
- Super glue

Here’s what you do:
1. Start by washing your beach rocks and shells. If you don’t you will most certainly regret it because they will start to smell within a day or two. Plus, they are from the beach and there is most likely sand on them. I used warm water and dish soap to wash mine.
2. My plan was to glue the rocks onto the glass on the outside of the frame, but I needed something in the background of the frame to make the rocks and shells stand out. I accomplished that by using a piece of black poster board.
All I did was trace the paper that came inside the frame onto the poster board and cut it out.

I think the black background is perfect.

3. Next up is to glue the rocks and shells onto the outside of the frame using super glue. Since some of the rocks can get heavy, I would recommend using super glue as opposed to regular glue. That way the rocks are going to stay in place.
I started with the “body” so that way I knew where to place the rest of the rocks.

Once I had the body in place, I added the head, halo, two legs and then moved onto the clam shell wings.

4. Let the glue dry thoroughly and that’s it. You’ve got yourself a beautiful angel made out of beach rocks and shells. I actually ended up making three of them: one for me, one for my sister and one for my dad. I am going to give them to them on Mother’s Day. We are actually planning on meeting at the cemetery to release balloons that day, so I will give them their gifts there.

Of course I can’t just hand them to my dad and sister – I needed to wrap them first. I was recently up at Hanscom AFB with my hubby, so I stopped into the AAFES store (or as most military people call it, the BX = Base Exchange) for some American Greetings wrapping supplies.

American Greetings has the perfect Mother’s Day card for every mom and I knew that the BX would have everything I needed in one place. Think about it, on Army and Air Force bases, many of the people stationed there are removed from their extended families. It’s great that they can head to the AAFES store and get everything they need to celebrate Mother’s Day with friends who became family.

I ended up stocking up on an assortment of American Greetings gift bags, tissue paper and Mother’s Day cards for my mother in law and Nana. I was really happy by the variety and selection of gift bags, wrapping paper, tissue paper and cards they had. Right now there is a promotion going on for American Greetings cards. If you buy 3 cards you will save $2 (4/17 – 5/14)!
Honestly, while I am kind of dreading Mother’s Day this year because of obvious reasons, I am thankful that I am going to be able to spend the day with my family celebrating my mom’s life. I can’t wait to give my dad and sister their Beach Rock Angels because I know they are going to love theirs as much as I love mine.
