I’m sure you’ve heard by now that play dough is great for kids with sensory issues. I happen to be the mom of a child with sensory issues and he absolutely loves to play with play dough. As much as I love the smell of the store bought kind (and I really, really do), I tend to make my own. The thing is when you make your own, you can get really creative with it. I have made dough in all sorts of colors, added sprinkles and my latest creation: Cinnamon Play Dough. This recipe will yield 1 cup of all natural, edible cinnamon play dough and since May 5th is quickly approaching, it is a perfect Cinco de Mayo craft!
Here’s what you need:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1 Tablespoon cream of tartar
- 2 Tablespoons cinnamon
- 2 Tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 cup boiling hot water
Here’s what you do:
1. In a large mixing bowl add the flour, salt, cream of tartar and cinnamon. Whisk until well it’s blended.
2. Add the coconut oil and stir again until well incorporated. (If your coconut oil is in a solid state, microwave in a small bowl for 20 seconds or until melted).
3. Slowly add the hot water and stir until the dough soaks up all of the water.
4. Let the Play dough cool for 5 minutes.
5. Begin to knead the play dough for at least 5 minutes to make it more elastic.
6. That’s it…ENJOY!!
You can store your homemade play dough in an airtight container for up to one month. Sometimes I even make an extra batch or two and send it into school with the kids – the teachers are always appreciative.
Have you ever made your own play dough before? Did you get creative with it?
